'Drowning on Dry Land'

So after this latest episode, do I STILL think Meredith is going to die?
NO.
I don't.
I did think for a split-second there that we were going to see a "Dallas" moment... and it was all going to be a dream. But then, she saw Denny and the paramedic. But even so, I think she'll back away from the light and return to her earthly life and loves... for OUR sakes as much as for hers.

I didn't feel like this episode was as ER'ish as the last one, thank goodness. This show returned us to the inner workings of the characters we've become attached to. I shed quite a few tears this time around.

0216_greyspic.jpg Alex still cannot get over his fear of connecting with people... can't even see patients as people, but his drive to help really pulled through for him. He so hoped that the pregnant woman he'd saved was the wife of the man in the clinic. Part of me thinks, it's because he was so proud of saving her and wanted to share that with the man and share the happy news that she'd pulled through. It was such a sad moment when the man found out his pregnant wife was dead... and Alex seemed so lost. He didn't know how to help or offer consolation. Very sad for both men.
Cristina seemed to know something was wrong with Meredith. She had that sixth sense about her friend. She was a little annoyed that Meredith hadn't come back from the scene, yet, but to me, her behavior was more worry than anger. I loved how she told Burke that Meredith is her "person." Don't we all have one of those?

merecris200.jpg There's that "person" we just have to share news with to somehow validate the experience... good or bad. And when Cristina realized Meredith was near death, I just cried. Such emotion. George was the best in that scene. He was so honest and raw.
I could have done without Izzie's "I believe" speech. It seemed so out of place. Too long. Too preachy. And to toss in George's marital "mistake" in there was a mistake in my opinion. It was really out of place. I thought her whole part there came across - not as the cute rambling many of the characters do in the face of drama - but as selfish and soap-boxish. I'm not sure what didn't work. The script or the acting.

0216_greysizzie.jpg The flip side is that Izzie truly WAS a "rock star" when she drilled the bird holes in the trapped man's head. Wow! She's back! And didn't all of that seem so REAL!? As I reflected on that scene again and again, I'm struck how REAL it all was. How'd they do that? I think the best part was before she did the drilling and the gave the man's friend the what for... telling him, he can't throw up or make noises or anything! It was funny.
The scene that choked me up the most was seeing Meredith's "knight in shining whatever" come up the ramp from the water. Something just grabbed my heart and my throat and squeezed when we saw Meredith - all blue-faced - in the arms of a grief-striken Derek. Oh my. He's such a hero. And he just can't lose the woman he's meant to be with. He just can't.
Another tender moment: When Mark reached out to Derek - his "brother" as he's called him in the past. Maybe there's hope for them to bury the hatchet. I mean if Derek can forgive Addison... I think Mark is Derek's "person"... he just won't admit it.
I did wonder, as everyone was working frantically on Meredith, were any other patients from the disaster scene being helped? I mean - it looked like every Seattle Grace doc was in the room with Meredith - or right outside. Then again - who cares about them! This is OUR show...
So.
Asking again: Do I think Meredith is going to die?
No.
I KNEW Denny would die the moment we met him. I think we all knew.
Meredith is different.
Meredith is the heart of this show.
Hell, her NAME is part of the title.
How could she be gone?
Another popular ABC show killed off a main character right away and she lives on in voice only. So, that's been "done"... They can't go there.
Besides. Part of Meredith's thing is that she's a survivor.
I think we'll be dragged along, but it's not her time.
It can't be her time.
I hope I'm right.

I didn't so much see it as Cris caring about Meredith as wanting to know where she was because she needed to tell "her person" she was engaged. So once again, it was all about Cris!

I couldn't agree more about the Izzy speech. It stuck out like a sore thumb.

I am a loyal Grey's Anatomy fan and numerous persons that surround me can testify to this fact. However, after last night's episode (02/15/07), I have numerous practical questions. First, why were eight or more surgeons paged to Meredith's side after she was transported to Seattle Grace following Dr. McDreamy's rescuing her from the depths of the ocean. Particularly, Addison, who is an OB/GYN surgeon. Furthermore, why were the surgeons called to Meredith's side, and not actually assisting in her care, e.g. George, Izzy, Christina, not tending the numerous other mass catastrophe patients who are waiting in numbers for emergency medical care and treatment. And why Sloan? Does he care about any one other than himself or plastics? Unless Meredith experienced mass facial lacerations, which it appears she did not, I am unclear as to why Sloan was paged to the OR where Meredith was being treated. I would tend to think that the show will lose credibility if Meredith somehow pulls through her current medical status without permanent cognitive impairment. If she were submerged long enough for her body temperature to fall at least sixteen degrees, then I would have to think her brain lacked oxygen during that long time period as well. Lastly, if that were my friend, I would rip off my clothes in a frenzy and place my body next to her in an attempt to raise her body temperature...unless the doctors don't actually think that she can be revived or saved. Why was George O'Mally searching for the kid - can't he have delegated this task to a support staff person and focused on trauma patients? Or Alex, why was he acting as Public Relations and not a surgeon? Or the fifth year Resident (Ms. Hugs), why was she handing out juice and staring at Alex instead of tending to patients with gauze, or my gosh, a scalpel? Need to know asap.

It was an amazing episode. I agree with you about Cristina's behavior, and Izzy's weird speech, and McSteamy reaching out to McDreamy, and just about everything else you said above. It was a great episode all around. But they CAN'T kill Mer. No way.

The show is only living up to its title. It's called Grey's Anatomy. Now that she's dead, then they'll be able to study her anatomy.

I believe Mer will die and her mom will take on her body and therefore continue with grey's anatomy... just not meredith. Izzies monologue was over the top but haven't we all said stuff out of place during times of panic/grief/stress/ (you add your own).
I think George and Callie will defy odds and they are good for each other.
Sloan is really a gay guy who will end up dating Joe from the bar.

To the person commenting Meredith would need to have some sort of mental impairment i've been doing some reading on hypothermia and its entirely possible that the fact she has hypothermia could make it entirely plausible for her to survive completely unscathed by anything except her near death "experience". The rule with a cold body is its not dead til its warm. So... Meredith lives.

On the other hand I am glad that Sloan reached out to Derek. That moved me but the moment when Cristina found out that it was Meredith near death I knew that would get through that shell of coldness she wears. Meredith and her are good for each other. They are each other's person. I understand why she didn't want anyone to know before Meredith knew. I mean when you are twins of a different mother you can't do anything without clearing it with them first. Watch, that coldness that Cristina hides behind will be her strength right now as she fights for her friend to live.

Thanks Barbara. I think you are absolutely right. And I found the comments from Abregaza very interesting. I'd wondered the same thing, but I figured I would have to delay my "reality check" that Meredith wouldn't have brain damage if ... I mean WHEN... she comes out of it. Good to know.
