"Haunt You Every Day" reflections

071026_grey1_200.jpgDoes anybody remember the game Sesame Street shows children called "Which one doesn't belong?" That's the first thing that came to me after watching this week's show.
What doesn't belong?
The foot. The relationship. The ashes. The no-eared boy. Single-again Derek. Single-again Chief. The intern. The heart.
Before I get into that though... first let me say that the boy who Trick-or-Treated for ears (Ryan) was phenomenal. (Where was his mother, though... still in the cafeteria... seriously?) He's Dylan Minnette, and I knew I'd seen him somewhere before. For such a little guy, he has quite the repertoire. Most recently, I'd seen him as the cute, precocious nephew on TNT's "Saving Grace." What an amazing kid he must be. On the screen, he's fantastic, adorable, funny, clever, sweet. Off-screen, I can only imagine what a hoot he must be. He stole the show for me.
Can I just say I'm SO glad Rebecca wanted to be "Ava" for Halloween. What a reunion, huh? I had to back that sucker up and watch it again.
So tender. Electric. Almost satisfying. We GA fans needed a little of that following all of the ups and downs with MerDer. Such a sweet moment when Alex found the shirt Rebecca had left for him... *sigh*...
Love the hard-a$$ heart surgeon. That's going to be fun to watch. Boy Cristina had a rude awakening, didn't she? And I'm with Izzie on this one: Turnabout is fair play. Cristina is great at dishing it out but she's not great at taking it.
Loved the gigglefest with Callie and Cristina in the O.R. ... laughing about their pathetic love lives. I mean... what else are you going to do when your life is a wreck? You can fall apart. You can get angry. You can move on. Or at least try. So why not laugh?
What a slut Mark Sloan is... telling Callie he's available "night or day" to help her. Puleezz. No wonder the nurses started their little club against him. That's hysterical. Then... was it just me? Or did anybody else think he was hitting on Meredith before the ears surgery? He HAS to stay away from her. He just rekindled his friendship with Derek. He cannot go there! She can't either, right?
071026_greys2_200.jpgBailey... please don't lose your family. She may be the Mama Bear for the core GA crew, but she is still a real mother to a Little Guy. My heart really ached for her when she fought with her husband. Career vs. Family. Tough one. Always.
Major headway between Lexie and Meredith when they connected over their dead mothers. Both of their stories have major "eewww" factors. They MUST be related.
The one part that had Big Ol' Alligator Tears rolling down my face was when Meredith finally, finally laid her mother to rest. At face value, it's disgusting... in essence, flushing her mother down a sink. The reality was Meredith knew that's exactly where her mother would want to be. That's where she chose to be all of Meredith's life. That was the center of Ellis' world when she was alive, and I'm so glad Richard was there to share it with Meredith. He is possibly the only other person in Meredith's world - in THE world - who could understand. It was beautiful, really. The quiet, non-ceremony for Ellis. I wonder if either Meredith or Richard will ever get enough distance from her poisonous love. I hope so. I hope so much that this is a threshold Meredith crosses to walk toward greater, happier things.
What else...Oh...
LOONY: It IS crazy to cut one's foot off with a chainsaw ... on purpose!
ANNOYING: The happy-go-lucky resident flirting with Derek made my skin crawl.
DEVASTATING: The man accepted a heart from his own daughter! That would haunt me every day.
TRIUMPHANT: Izzie and George DID make it through the day. Although, I had to wonder ... if they wondered ... as I wonder - "Okay, now what?"

Guest Star Tidbit

If you were a fan of Dawson's Creek once upon a time... one of the actors from that show will make an appearance (or several) this season on Grey's Anatomy. Variety is reporting Joshua Jackson "will play a doctor in a multi-episode arc of 'Grey's,' beginning with this season's 11th episode."

"Haunt You Every Day" Preview

"Haunt You Every Day" is the name of this week's episode. (October 25)
It's Halloween, and the day is full of surprises for the doctors of Seattle Grace. Alex receives an unexpected and welcome visit from his former patient, Ava/Rebecca. Meredith is convinced that her mother's ashes are haunting her. Cristina is snubbed by a surgeon she admires, and Callie announces George and Izzie's affair to their fellow doctors.

Ohh, this one was good

"The Heart of the Matter" transported us back to the Pre-Dark and Twisty Days of appreciating - no, LOVING - Grey's Anatomy. Would you agree?
I think we all secretly wanted to see a chick fight between Izzie and Callie, didn't we? But it really wasn't a surprise when the two met face-to-face in the cafeteria at noon and (awkward!) Callie was dumbfounded by Izzie's interpretation. A fist fight? Really?! Callie is too much of a grownup for her own good. She really deserved to put the beat down on Izzie even if George was to blame, as well, for her pain. Forgiving George seemed to be the right, grownup, wifely thing to do. So she mulled over, considered and decided to do just that. But deep down, we're all human. Mortal. Vulnerable. Easily wounded when it comes to matters of the heart. We saw that when Callie nearly ripped apart the boyfriend of the girl who - pretty much - starved herself to death for his love. Callie couldn't lash out directly at those close to her who have hurt her. Bailey - God love her - is trying to help Callie. But Callie will have none of it. She can handle it herself. I secretly applauded when Callie did finally face Izzie. I'm a huge Izzie fan, but seeing Callie lay down the law made me cheer for her. Izzie is lovable and fallible and downright goofy sometimes. But she is such a child, and she is selfish. And good for Alex for letting her have it, too!
Maybe that's why Izzie and George have this chemistry and connection (which still eludes me). I haven't been the biggest Callie fan thus far, but she really won me over this week. It just isn't fair when a strong, successful woman who has done everything right gets slapped in the face and stabbed in the heart by someone she loves.
The other tragedy is Meredith.
What is wrong with this woman? Dr. Derek Shepherd stands there telling her that he loves her, wants to marry her, wants to have children with her... and she so obviously wants to turn and run at the sound of those words. He's slowing bleeding out with every little knick she makes on his heart. She's killing his love, and in a way, she's killing him. Again, it's not fair. He has done and is doing everything right. Yes, in the first season he lied about being married... But other than that, he's committed no sin other than loving an emotionally unavailable woman. He actually realized what and who he needs and wants. Yet he's the one suffering because the object of his affection just won't let him love her and won't let herself be loved. I know there are damaged people in this world. Meredith Grey is certainly representative of them, but as much as I love MerDer, I'm starting to agree with Mark. Derek needs to move on. I can't believe I said that. It's just that I so want him to receive the love he deserves.

The Cat's Out of the Bag

071018_eva.jpgDo you remember a line during the first episode of this season when Izzie mentioned that Alex "went on a road trip to see Ava" without her?
Mr. Defensive retorted, "I did not go to see Ava, and her name is Rebecca. And I didn't go to see her, I just drove in that direction."
We know Ava/Rebecca. We love Ava/Rebecca... Who could forget the horribly disfigured, pregnant, amnesiac from the ferry accident who turned out to be the gorgeous love of Alex's life... who (sadly) returned to her (loser) husband and baby's father... leaving Alex alone and heartbroken even though (I guess technically), Alex didn't fight for her.
(Deep breath...)
Anyway.
Hearing that in Episode One gave me hope it was a hint, but as days and episodes wore on I let go of the fantasy that Ava/Rebecca would return.
Well, well, WELL... Guess what?
TV Guide is getting blasted for revealing - right on the cover - that Ava/Rebecca is coming back to the show. Don't click on THIS LINK unless you want to see said cover. But I guess we've blown it now, too. Granted, if you're reading this blog, you want to know ALL THINGS Grey's. So I don't feel too bad. Plus, they were really the only other love-line I really felt a connection to besides MerDer. Alex deserves some happiness, dang it! But, I digress.
Elizabeth Reaser (seen here at right) is reprising her Emmy-nominated role. We're not exactly sure how many episodes she'll be in... We know she'll be in the one November 1st. We hear there will probably be more than one episode for her. That's promising... donchathink?

Look ahead to "The Heart of the Matter"

SLIDESHOW: "Let the Truth Sting"

"The Heart of the Matter" Thursday, October 18th:
The Chief's wife, Adele, rushes their niece to Seattle Grace, the hospital where she once had her prom, Izzie reveals her feelings for George to a mutual friend, and the reaction is not what she expects. Derek teaches Cristina how to be a better teaching resident, and the world's oldest living intern, Norman, misdiagnoses one of Meredith's patients.

"Let the Truth Sting"

1011_merelexie200.jpgFinally... some middle ground.
The Grey girls managed to bridged a major gap this week. It was interesting to see the hopeful, happy-go-lucky, isn't-life-grand Lexie reveal her dark and twisty side. In earlier episodes, she desperately wanted to be her Big Sister's friend. But this week, she seemed sour. Sad. We all know why. I mean, she lost her mother in that hospital for crying out loud. Her sister treated her mother. When the two finally came together to go over the chart, I welled up with tears, too. It was a clinical approach to a relationship, but it was something. I'm starting to like this... a lot.
This episode certainly lived up to its title, though. Not only with Meredith and Lexie, but with the -- shall we say -- "mature" intern and Alex. I wanted to slap that guy. Not Alex. The other one. The fatherly intern with run-off-at-the-mouth disease. Lordy. He was wearing on my nerve. Pretty funny though.
1011_baileyalex200.jpgBailey's acceptance of being Number Two -- "The best damned Number Two this hospital has ever seen" -- killed me a little bit. I know. I know! It was the right thing to do, and once again, Bailey rises above everything and everyone for the Greater Good. But gee whiz! It's not fair! If Callie isn't cutting it then why SHOULD Bailey carry her? Life's not fair. And there is a pecking order for a reason... I get it. Dang it.
Alex didn't seem to have too much trouble slipping back into his calloused ways of dealing with co-workers. Revealing George's secret in the elevator was mean. 1011_oldintern200x264.jpg Somebody needed to do it... yes. But it was mean. Cold! He's really showing his chops as a doctor, though. How gross was that procedure he performed on the kid! (That eyeball was very life-like, by the way... Ewww.) Hero!
My favorite part of this week's show was meeting "Really Old Guy." Yes, his name is/was Charlie. I loved him. What a mess he was. He certainly doled out a dose of reality to Izzie about her relationship with George, didn't he? Zing! And he still managed to carry out his own destiny, in his own way. And in the eulogy, I almost shot Diet Coke through my nose when Dear Sweet Bambish Izzie called him a "bastard." But you know? She was right, and she saw the real Charlie.
On to Cristina. Okay, I'm so mad at her for faking sadness to get surgeries. I know that is just like her. That is her personality. Get-ahead Cristina. And I still think she's due for a real breakdown. A real crack in the armor is coming. But in this case, Meredith (for once) really tried to consider someone else's -- her best friend's -- feelings by keeping her fling with Derek to herself. I mean, there's no way those two can hide their feelings and everybody's going to know it anyway, but still! Her heart was in the right place. It kinda ticked me off that Cristina took advantage of that. She didn't seem like a real friend in that moment.
Speaking of Derek... Boy, he really smacked Mark and the Chief for giving in to their "Old Man" complex and taking risks with a woman's ability to ever speak again. He was right. It seemed a little out of place to me, though, especially since he can't face his own reality... his own issues with Meredith. But it's always easier to point fingers at someone else and bring their faults into focus.
Wasn't that the message with the Tongue Cancer Patient and her friends?
The truth hurts. But we need to hear it. I suppose we do, anyway.
So my cold hard truth is that I wish the whole George and Callie (and Izzie) thing would end as quickly as this week's episode did.
But I've seen the previews. Get ready for a chick rumble in the cafeteria.
Okay... I'll stick around for that.

The new season has the old magic

0402greys_200.jpgSLIDESHOW: "Grey's Anatomy" Cast

SLIDESHOW: "Love/Addiction"

So far, the new season of Grey's Anatomy has recaptured its old charm. I think so, anyway. I'm riveted. I'm engaged. I'm anticipating what's coming next. And I'm excited about it. No more putting my hands over my face and watching through my fingers.
Mer-Der is taking an odd turn. Addiction? Well, maybe. Haven't we all hung onto something or someone because we just can't bear the idea of giving it up? We might know it's not good for us, but we just can't help ourselves.
I LOVE IT!
The sister drama is playing out in a way I didn't expect because Meredith is so mean. Then again - her explanation to Lexie (I think it has an "e") made total sense. Meredith was the forgotten child. Lexie seemed to have Daddy's heart. But I wonder what else is going on there. Lexie let us in a little bit when she was talking with George in her get-over-it speech to him in episode one. Sounds like Daddy was a drunk. What a crazy, uncomfortable dynamic!
I LOVE IT!
Then there's Bambi and the Bore. I miss the old George. The not-so-conflicted, happy-go-lucky George. The cute, awkward but oddly competent George. I suppose this whole love triangle is serving a purpose, though. There are probably a lot of people who can relate to staying in relationships out of obligation... selling themselves short for (what they think is) the greater good.
Great closure with 'Mama' ... the Grand Dame Mrs. Burke. Nice way to tidy up that whole Burktina unhappy ending. My heart ached for Christina in the closing scene. I did love, though, how she started using all her cool wedding gifts as pawns to get things she needed. Hilarious.
Oh... and ALEX!

"We're broken up"... Say it isn't so

Here's another look at last week's ending and what's in store for us tonight.
Oooh it's gonna be good!
